Your organisations have made a huge contribution to human progress and equality by supporting scientific research and development projects. Yet the investments in hydropower dams are putting this progress at great risk.

The Mekong is one of the great rivers of the world. From the Tibetan Plateau, the river runs through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam’s Mekong delta into the sea. We believe that a healthy river is vital for the prosperity and sustainability of the region. Every effort must be made to support and preserve the river’s rich biodiversity and ecosystem, as well as the lives, cultures and traditions that it supports.

The Mekong River is under threat. Many hydropower dams on the Mekong river’s mainstream are built or being planned. If built, the dams would block major fish migrations and disrupt this vitally important river, placing at risk millions of people who depend upon the Mekong for their food security and income.
